What is MIL-STD 810?



This is a series of comprehensive tests devised by the United States Army to test the suitability of equipment. The letter after 810 (C, D, E, F) refers to the version number of the specification, F is the latest and was released in 2006. The tests that are most relevant to radio are shown below.

Low Pressure – tested at altitude.
High Temperature - when stored or operated.
Low Temperature - when stored or operated.
Temperature Shock – sudden temperature changes.
Solar Radiation – reaction to sun light.
Rain – reaction to wind blown rain.
Humidity – reaction to high humidity.
Salt Fog – will the equipment fail or rust.
Dust – how does the radio work when exposed to dust.
Vibration – reaction to specific vibrations.
Shock – mechanical shock test.

Each version may have differing methods and procedures of testing, so the more versions that are applicable to the radio under test the more comprehensive the test.
