Earpieces come in a variety of types from the simple receive only earbud to three-wire earpiece with microphone and PTT combined. They are smaller and more discrete than headsets but still have many of their advantages. Some earpieces include a microphone that can be operated in 'hands free' mode or by a built in push to talk switch. For security and surveillance work some earpieces can be fitted with a clear acoustic tube and the PTT switch routed to the hand via the sleeve for discrete operation.
