The battery is one of the most important components of a two way radio, without the correct well maintained battery even the most sophisticated and expensive handportable will not perform to the best of its ability. It is usually wisest to buy the radio manufactures own battery as these have been specifically designed to give optimum performance on their radios and often contain complex curcuitry to protect the radio and user from damage. Many cheaper copies do not have this protection built in.

It is well to remember that batteries do not last forever and have usually passed their best after 18 - 24 months of normal use. If the performance of your handportable has deteriorated within this time it may well be worth changing the radios battery.
